Ukulele for young children

Inspiring young children to enjoy reading and playing music can be accomplished if they feel successful.  Playing music should not only be fun, but should help them feel confident.  The ukulele is a perfect instrument for very young children because the 4 strings, small chord shapes and small size of the instrument make it friendly for small hands. Fine motor skills are improved as the child increases their knowledge of chords and plucking. Children as young as four can learn to read and play notes on the treble clef. Most of my young students also highly enjoy strumming chords and singing songs such as "Skip to my Lou" and "Yankee Doodle."  As we progress through the program, I customize the songs to include their favorite Disney songs are other requests. Children also enjoy taking their ukulele on trips and performing for friends or relatives. It is truly a joy to see my students loving music in this way.
