Teaching Pre-Readers
There is a misconception that young children cannot learn to love music or play piano. The goal in teaching very young children is to impart a love for music and an excitement for learning the concepts. By creating a fun, stimulating environment and experience, a teacher can engage young children in ways that impart a desire to learn and participate. Developing rapport with the child by responding to their interests and cues is crucial. Retaining a sense of warmth and a good sense of humor contributes to a positive experience for both child AND teacher. A child will respond well to someone who genuinely cares about and enjoys them.
Nancy Faber's Piano adventures is a brilliant curriculum and invaluable resource for teaching very young children music. The concepts of music are shared through story, interactive activities and with colorful, vibrant pictures. The supporting soundtrack available online for parents to access or through CD included in the book encourage children to practice at home.
As a teacher, I find a great deal of satisfaction in watching my very young students progress through the books, learn general concepts, show excitement about learning and even teaching ME about their passions. It is a privilege, indeed.
